Dilbert - Scott Adams

Sad but (almost) true; Dilbert sheds more light on organisational life than any 10 management gurus. I'm sorry...

New Rules for the New Economy - Kevin Kelly

I first stumbled across Kevin Kelly's Out of Control in the remaindered bin at MPH Bookstore in Singapore in 1998 - and have read it every 18 months since then. OOC is a pretty wide-ranging ramble through idea-space though; more to the point (and several hundred pages shorter) if you are in business or delivering public services is New Rules for the New Economy. Forget that this is a 1998 book and that it predates the dot.com bubble bursting; the principles Kelly distills are absolutely applicable in the genuinely wired world that is emerging from the dot.com rubble.

The One Thing You Need to Know - Marcus Buckingham

This one is probably well on the radar by now - except that its title is likely to put off some of those who will be most attracted by its message and who don't already know Buckingham's work. Far from being the simplistic panacaea suggested by the title, this is a deeply insightful - and data-driven - exploration of three key areas of work life: leadership; management; and sustainable personal success.

All Marketers Are Liars - Seth Godin

Seth Godin has been slaughtering sacred cows (and replacing them with purple ones) for years. All Marketers Are Liars is not quite as iconoclastic as it sounds; as the back of the book confesses, "Marketers aren't really liars... but they do tell great stories." Far from being a manifesto for deceiving the public, this is a book about the power of authenticity.

(for details of the book - the blog does seem to have got slightly stuck on the negative aspects of "story")

Creating Passionate Users - Kathy Sierra

If you have only one shot at keeping your intellect alive each week - this should be it. And I mean that, whether you are the Chairperson of GE or a newly-fledged business development assistant at Tesco or a two-person start-up: Kathy Sierra's is the most engaging and stimulating voice on the Web. Period.
